Our Artist in Residence

Rachel our Artist in Residence joined us in 2024 after Lou who worked with us for many wonderful years moved onto new projects. Rachel has seamlessly continued and built on this legacy, where her work enhances all areas of our nursery school curriculum. Look out for her weekly blogs on her work with the children which can be found below.
The Big Draw is a cultural literacy charity that promotes drawing as a tool for thought, creativity, social connection, and vitality. Its annual festival features thousands of drawing events worldwide.
The award recognizes the school's innovative visual arts project led by resident artist Rachel Hyde. The initiative engaged young children, their families, and local residents in collective drawing workshops designed to rebuild community connections, promote well-being, and express unity through art.
- Intergenerational Collaboration: Children and parents co-created large-scale textile and paper installations.
- Inclusive Mark-Making: Activities were tailored to ensure children of all abilities could participate fully.
- Community Healing: The artwork focused on the joy of physically coming back together to create.
The Big Draw Festival is the world’s largest drawing festival, promoting visual literacy and the universal language of drawing. The panel of judges praised Strong Close Nursery School for its deeply inclusive approach and its ability to embed high-quality arts education into early years learning.
